Michelle Obama, meet the girls from Lynn.

Imagine our surprise when we found out Chica Project was selected to receive free tickets to “Becoming: An Intimate Conversation with Michelle Obama,” the former First Lady’s book tour.

About 15 students from Lynn’s KIPP AcademyHigh School got to join 25 of their fellow Chica Project members in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We were one of four organizations in the Commonwealth selected to attend this event at TD Garden.

If you have not yet read “Becoming,” buy it from a black-owned independent bookstore.

Everything about this book and this extraordinary woman speaks to who Chica Project is.
From the book:  “For every door that’s been opened to me, I’ve tried to open my door to others. And here is what I have to say, finally: Let’s invite one another in. Maybe then we can begin to fear less, to make fewer wrong assumptions, to let go of the biases and stereotypes that unnecessarily divide us. Maybe we can better embrace the ways we are the same. It’s not about being perfect. It’s not about where you get yourself in the end. There’s power in allowing yourself to be known and heard, in owning your unique story, in using your authentic voice. And there’s grace in being willing to know and hear others. This, for me, is how we become.”

Help us open more doors and more girls BECOME.

“Do we settle for the world as it is, or do we work for the world as it should be?”
